Sound familiar?

Gravel lanes across Polk County wash out, rut and washboard faster than you can haul in more rock.

  • Every heavy rain carves new ruts where the stock trailer and feed truck turn in.
  • Dust off the lane coats the house, the pickup and the porch all summer long.
  • Fresh gravel gets spread every year, then ends up in the ditch by fall.

Local conditions

Prairie edges, chert hills and two rivers

Polk County rolls from open prairie on the west side to wooded, cherty hills on the east. The Sac River and its Little Sac branch drain the west, while the Pomme de Terre runs north toward the lake that shares its name. Soils here are mostly silty loam over a stony red clay subsoil, which drains slowly in spring. Much of the land is pasture and hay ground, so heavy farm equipment and livestock trailers work the roads hard. Wet springs and hot, dry summers are the normal pattern, with plenty of freeze and thaw through the winter.

What we see most in Polk County

Washboard on gravel

Gravel roads that carry trucks every day shake into ridges that rattle every vehicle. Grading helps for a few weeks, then it comes right back.

Ruts at gates and turns

Where trailers swing in through a gate, the wheels dig deep grooves in soft ground. Those spots hold water and get worse each season.

Washed-out low crossings

Lanes that dip toward a creek or draw lose rock every time water runs over them. A firmer, sealed surface with better shape can cut down on that.

Tired driveways in town

Older homes near the square often have asphalt that has gone gray, brittle and cracked. A new layer on a sound base brings them back.

The solution

A Lane That Stays Put

We know what a bad lane costs you in time, tires and rock.

Hauling gravel every spring gets old, and so does watching it slide into the ditch. When the lane is how hay, cattle and family all get in and out, it needs to hold. You want it done once and done right.

We've worked in asphalt and chip seal for 15 years, and our business is family owned and operated. Farm roads and ranch lanes are a big part of what we do, along with home driveways, parking lots and RV parks. All of our work carries a 1 year warranty.

We'll lay a surface that suits your ground and your traffic, at a fair price agreed before we start.

Benefits

What you get

Fewer Truckloads of Rock

Sealed chip seal surface

Chip seal locks the stone in place with a binder, so it doesn't scatter the way loose gravel does. That usually means a lot less hauling and spreading each year.

Grip on Hills and Turns

Textured stone finish

The rough top gives tires something to bite into on a slope or a muddy morning. Pickups pulling trailers get in and out with less spinning.

Both Jobs, One Plan

Asphalt paving and chip seal

If the house drive needs asphalt and the barn lane needs chip seal, we handle both. You get one plan and one number to call.

How it works

3 simple steps

  1. Step 1

    Tell us about your lane

Give us a call at (816) 375-1940 or send the form with where the property is. We'll drive out and look it over for a free on-site estimate.

  2. Step 2

    Seal or pave the surface

We get the base and shape ready, then put down chip seal or asphalt to match the plan we agreed on together.

  3. Step 3

    Haul hay, not gravel

Your lane or drive is firm, sealed and ready for feed trucks, trailers and everyday driving.

Our recommendation

For a farm road or a long lane out in the county, chip seal usually gives the best value, since it covers a lot of ground and gives good grip on hills. For a home driveway or a business lot in Bolivar, asphalt makes more sense, with a smooth surface that's easy to keep clean. At the free on-site estimate we'll measure, check the drainage and tell you which way we'd go.

FAQ

Polk County questions

Still have questions? Call (816) 375-1940. We pick up.

Will chip seal hold up to cattle trailers and tractors?+

Chip seal handles normal farm traffic well when it is laid over a firm, well-drained base. Very sharp turns with heavy loads can scuff the top, so we plan the layout with your turn-ins in mind. We'll talk it through when we visit.

How does the clay subsoil here affect a lane?+

Clay drains slowly, so water sits under a lane after rain and softens it. That's where ruts and potholes start. Getting the base and the shape right matters more here than the top layer alone.

Do you work out by Pomme de Terre Lake and the Sac River?+

Yes. We serve the whole county, including lake homes, campgrounds and farm ground along the rivers. Give us the address and we'll come out.

Is asphalt or chip seal better for a house in Bolivar?+

For most homes in town, asphalt is the better pick for its smooth finish and clean look. Chip seal fits better when the drive is long or climbs a hill. We'll give you an honest answer for your lot.

Can you work around hay season and calving?+

We know farm work has its busy stretches. Tell us when your lane gets the most use and we'll try to plan around it. Our working days are Monday to Friday.
