Sound familiar?
Up on Webster County's high ground, gravel drives freeze, thaw and break up into washboard and potholes every winter.
- Commuters heading out to I-44 rattle over the same washboard every single morning.
- Thaw season turns the lane to mush, and tires leave deep tracks that freeze solid overnight.
- Gravel lots along US 60 throw rocks at cars and puddle up in the low corners.
Local conditions
High ground where the rivers begin
Webster County rides a high upland divide, and Marshfield sits among the highest county seats in Missouri. Several streams start here, including the Niangua flowing north and the James heading west toward Springfield. The soils are mostly silty loams over cherty clay, with flat ridge tops that drain slowly and steeper slopes toward the creeks. Being up high and fairly open, the county catches its share of ice and plenty of freeze and thaw. Pasture, hay and cattle cover much of the land between the towns.
What we see most in Webster County
Frost heave on lanes
Water trapped under a gravel lane freezes and pushes the surface up, then drops it again in the thaw. That cycle breaks a lane apart from below.
Washboard near the road
Where cars speed up and brake near the county road, gravel shakes into ridges. It's rough on suspensions and hard to keep graded.
Slow-draining ridge tops
Flat ground on the ridges holds water instead of shedding it. Lanes there need careful shaping so rain has somewhere to go.
Worn asphalt in town
Older drives in the towns along the highway have dried out and cracked into small blocks. A new layer on a solid base brings back a clean, smooth surface.
The solution
Ready for Ridge Winters
If your lane falls apart every thaw, you're not alone.
Freeze and thaw is tough on any surface up here, and gravel takes it worst. You need the drive to work for early commutes, feed runs and the school bus at the road. Patching it every March just isn't a plan.

Our recommendation
For homes in Marshfield, Fordland or Diggins, and for business lots that see daily traffic, asphalt paving gives a smooth, clean surface that's easy to clear. For long farm lanes and drives out on the ridge, chip seal is usually the more sensible choice, holding the stone in place and usually costing less per foot than asphalt. We'll look at your drainage and traffic at the free on-site estimate before we suggest anything.

FAQ
Webster County questions
Still have questions? Call (816) 375-1940. We pick up.
Why does my gravel lane break up so badly every thaw?+
When water soaks into the lane and freezes, it lifts the surface, then lets it drop when it melts. On the flat, slow-draining ground up here that can happen many times a winter. A sealed surface on a firm, well-drained base cuts down on that damage.
Is chip seal good for a commuter drive near I-44?+
It can be, especially on a long drive where full paving would cost more. If you want a smooth finish right up to the garage, asphalt may suit you better. We'll explain the trade-offs at the estimate.
Do you cover the whole county, east and west?+
Yes, we work from Rogersville on the west side out to Seymour in the east, and every farm road in between. Long lanes and town drives are both normal work for us.
Can you work on a parking lot along a busy road?+
Yes. We plan the job around your traffic and talk through access before we start. Our hours are weekdays, so we'll pick days that work for your business.
Are in-town driveways in Marshfield different from farm lanes?+
They are. In town, drives are shorter, flatter and often tucked between a house and the street, so asphalt's clean finish usually wins. Out on the farm, length and heavy loads tip the scale toward chip seal. We'll help you weigh it.
